The warm water splashes your face. Instant calmness and relaxation set in as you reinvigorate your tired skin. Your skincare routine is the perfect way to gracefully energize yourself for the day ahead or settle your body and mind for a better night’s sleep.
But are your anti-aging efforts as effective as you think?
How you wash your face either prevents aging or encourages it. Consider what you may be doing wrong so you can strengthen your skincare skills and avoid premature aging.
Using the wrong cleanser for your skin type.
This is a damaging, yet common mistake made when starting a skincare regimen. You know you need to use a facial cleanser to avoid breakouts. So you head over to the drug store and find a nicely packaged cleanser labeled with promising ingredients. It smells nice so you decide to give it a try.
Your skin soon becomes tight or itchy. Your makeup isn’t sitting right, or your skin is suddenly breaking out more than usual. You may even experience irritation or flaking skin.
These are sure signs that you’re not using the right cleanser for your skin type.
Facial cleansers carry active ingredients to treat specific skin conditions associated with different skin types. Using ingredients not suited for your skin may dry you out and cause damage or clog your pores
Did you know any skin type can have a breakout?
A common misconception is if you have blemishes, you need to use products that treat oily or acneic skin. But having blemishes on your face doesn’t mean you’re an oily skin type. And using such products will strip your skin of natural oils and cause moisture loss. In other words, these products may be too harsh for your skin type.
You could have a breakout for a number of reasons. Acne isn’t always related to your skin type.
Using a cleansing oil or balm.
The double-cleanse method may be a great way to remove makeup faster while ridding the skin of debris and oil. But this method is only effective if rightly executed.
Have you ever felt your skin after washing with cleansing oil and noticed how silky smooth it was?
No matter how great it feels, you don’t want this result after washing your face.
This is a sure sign you still have a film of cleansing oil or balm residing on your face.
This film will create a barrier between your skin and other skincare products which inhibits them from penetrating your pores.
If you want to keep using cleansing oil or balm, follow it with a water-based cleanser and wipe away all residue with a warm washcloth.
Using water to wash your face.
I’ve found that it’s actually very common for people to wash their face with only water. But ask yourself, do you brush your teeth with only water? Do you wash your hair with only water?
You need to use a product to remove debris and oils from your face. Water will only move particles around your skin without completely removing them.
Cleansing exposes bare skin underneath and stops toxins from making their way into your pores.
This also clears the path for your skincare products to penetrate the skin.
The effectiveness of every other skincare product you use depends on how you cleanse your face. If you want your products to reach deep within your cells for maximum results, you must use a cleanser day and night.
Using Bar Soap to Wash Your Face.
This is a huge skincare mistake, yet it’s widely used to cleanse the skin. The problem with bar soap is that they have a high pH, normally between the range of 8 and 10. Your skin’s natural pH is 5.5. Using bar soap causes irritation on the skin as well as creates an environment where bacteria thrive and have a higher presence.
Even facial cleanser bars are bad for the skin.
They carry a slightly lower pH than regular bar soaps, but it’s still too high for the skin. The binders which hold both bar soap and facial cleanser bars are very drying for the skin. You’re stripping your skin of moisture by washing your face with either type of bar soap.
Even if it claims to be moisturizing, stay far away!
Facial cleansers in the form of lotions, creams, liquids, or gels have a pH within the range of what the skin can handle to keep moisture in and stay balanced (assuming you have a good quality cleanser).
Skipping your morning face wash.
Another common mistake made is not washing your face in the morning. Some believe that it’s not necessary to cleanse in the am when they washed their face the night before.
But washing your face every morning is so important for maintaining healthy skin.
When you sleep, your skin collects debris from your pillowcase. Natural oils and sweat excrete onto your pillow every night and sit on your face all night long.
This is also why it’s so important to wash your pillowcase at least once a week.
When you rise in the am, your skin will also have a film of leftover product from the night before.
If you don’t rinse this film off as well as debris and oil, anything else you apply to your face won’t properly absorb. This leads to wasted product and money.
Washing with your Clarisonic daily.

Not using a good quality cleanser.

How to Wash Your Face The Right Way
Not only is it key to have a great quality facial cleanser, but you need to apply it properly to prevent wrinkles and sagging skin as you age. You don’t want to spend years putting forth the effort to follow a skincare regimen, but find that you accelerated what you’ve been trying to prevent.
When you wash your face, always work upwards and outwards with your hands in circular motions around your entire face, neck, and chest.
This prevents you from pulling downwards on your skin, which causes it to lose elasticity as you age.
If you need to cleanse twice, go for it! This may help remove any extra makeup left behind and more thoroughly cleanse the skin.
Use a water-based cleanser to ensure everything rinses off quick and easily.
Always make sure to rinse thoroughly before moving on to your next step.
