Choosing a Blog Niche
If you want to start a blog, you’ll first need to decide on a blog niche. Your niche is the source topic you’ll be focusing your blog around. It’s important because this will help you figure out topics to write about, keywords to look for, and attracting the right people (your target audience).
Many people will tell you to start a blog based on your passion, but this isn’t always a good idea. Not all topics will be successful online as they may not be popular enough to do much for you. For example, writing a blog focused on collecting shoelaces probably won’t convert well for you. You might get a few subscribers, but you may hit a point where it’s just not worth spending your time on anymore. Not if you want to make money from it anyway.
Some people will tell you that you need to have a super specific niche to be successful, but this isn’t always the case. For example, if you start a lifestyle blog, you may write about a bunch of different topics not related to each other.
But you don’t want to start a blog on indoor plants and then fill your blog with posts about finances. It just doesn’t make sense and people won’t stick around. (Although, with a lifestyle blog you could definitely write about both indoor plants and finances).
There are currently 7 blog niches that do well online. These blog niches are very broad here, so you’ll want to be a bit more specific when figuring out what topics to write.
1. Health & Fitness
Health and fitness are very popular blog niches to get into online. Many people today are very conscious of what they put in their bodies and how they can stay as healthy as possible. Of course, health and fitness alone are way too broad to write about so you’ll want to figure out exactly what topics you’ll write about.
There are also many different audiences within this industry so you need to figure out who you’re going to be talking to. (For example, do you want to help men in their 50’s lose weight? Or are you interested in helping millennial women build a nutrition plan that works for their busy lifestyles?
Figure out who you’re talking to, what their biggest problems are, and what topics they’re most interested in. This will help you figure out topics to start writing about as well as products you can offer them.

2. Beauty & Fashion
Beauty and fashion are booming blog niches, but again, planning is key to success.
Do you want to give women in their 20’s and 30’s access to great discounts and style advice? Or will you be teaching women how to dress after 40?
Instagram and Pinterest are great platforms for these industries. Even if you don’t have a blog yet, start networking now in one of these spaces to get to know who the big players are and to let people get to know you.
If you’re thinking of starting a blog in this space, you’ll want to sign up for Style Collective right away. I wish I found this community when I was first building my website. Make friends with these bloggers and influencers and collab with them. You’ll find your people and your audience here. Trust me.
Key bloggers in this niche are:
A lifestyle blog is great to start since it gives you room to write about pretty much everything under the sun. You still need to know who your target audience is, but you can write about many different topics.
I consider lifestyle blogs to be somewhat digital magazines in a sense as you’re selling someone a lifestyle. This could be a lifestyle focused on traveling, but also include great recipes for each season, style advice, beauty advice, self-care, finances, etc.
However, it’s important to completely cover every aspect of a topic before moving onto another one. You don’t want to write a post about home organization then write a post about summer cocktails. You want to give people a few posts to read on the same topic so you can interlink them and keep them on your site longer.
Although you can cover a variety of different topics with a lifestyle blog, you should make sure they all make sense on your blog. Again, know your target audience and make sure everything you write about is a message they’d want to hear.
Lifestyle blogs are great, but they can be a bit overwhelming. You’ll have people with different interests coming to when you cover multiple topics. You need to be able to serve each of these groups efficiently to keep them coming back. This is why you’ll also want to create segments in your email list so you know why people are signing up.
If someone signed up to receive updates on beauty and fashion, then you don’t want to send them emails related to saving money for vacations. Make sure you understand what your users are doing within your site to give them exactly what they’re looking for.
Big players rocking this niche include:
4. Personal Development
People are always interested in how they can become better versions of themselves.
Again, this is way too broad to cover every aspect of, but do some research into what people are interested in and figure out what your blog can focus on to serve them.
Things like leadership skills, presentation skills, and any other skills that help a person become sharper are always popular in the online space.
Prosperous personal development blogs include:
Personal finance is one of the more popular blog niches that are here to stay. People love to know how they can save money or make money.
Research topics you can cover on your blog to help your readers solve their biggest financial problems.
You may also learn some cool budgeting tips to improve your own financial situation along the way!

Food is another one of the popular blog niches you can make money from. Because who doesn’t want to stare at gorgeous plates of food all day long?
People are always looking for new and interesting recipes to make- especially on Pinterest.
You can go many different ways with this. Are you into authentic dishes from around the world? Do you want to teach people how to cook low-carb meals? Figure it out and find some affiliate products you can promote like cookware or recipe books. Or create your own recipe book. Live yo life. Do it up.
The skies the limit on what you can do here!
Successful food blogs include:
7. Online Business
Online business is one of the most profitable blog niches to get into online. But people want to see that you’ve already made money within this space if you’re going to discuss it.
However, it doesn’t mean you have to avoid the niche completely.
If you’re just starting out, you could avoid discussing monetization strategies until you’ve reached that point. Or share success stories others have experienced for examples.
The key is, to be honest in your writing. This is a niche commonly abused which gives making money online a bad rep.
Instead of making promises without evidence to back up your claims, you could take people on your journey and teach them how to do things online. Things like recommending good hosting platforms to use, how to start a blog, etc. Then when you’ve earned some money, you can write posts on what you did and how long it took to earn it.

Choosing Your Niche
Now that you know which blog niches are the most profitable in the online space, figure out what interests you the most. You don’t have to have a passion for it, but you have to be at least somewhat interested in whatever you choose.
You don’t want to pick something that’s going to bore you to death to write about. Otherwise, you’ll burn out really quick with this whole blogging thing. People will also see right through you if you’re just in it to make money.
When you build your blog, you’re creating a community of people who love what you do and will ask you questions on what you write about. Make sure you’re interested enough to hold conversations about your posts and help them as much as possible.
